AI Labour Market Monitor - August 2026

Published September 2026 · Data cut 15 September 2026 · Job-postings data through 31 August 2026

AI hiring continued to strengthen in August. In the US, 6.74% of Indeed job postings contained AI-related terms, up 6.2% from July and 95.9% from August 2025. Canada remained the most AI-intensive market in Indeed's public tracker at 18.25%, while the six tracked European markets reached an average of 7.13%.

The broader structural trend remains equally important: AI is spreading primarily through existing occupations adopting AI skills, rather than through the creation of entirely new AI occupations.

1. Headline KPI: Applied vs Technical AI Hiring

Applied / AI User roles use AI within an existing profession or business function. Technical / AI Developer roles focus on building, training, integrating or maintaining AI systems.

AI adoption Share
AI adoption within existing occupations93%
Dedicated AI occupations7%

This should not be interpreted as 93% strictly “non-technical”: existing occupations can include software and other technical roles. The global AI User vs AI Developer split provides a cleaner view of applied versus specialist AI hiring.

Key takeawayAcross every major sector, 86–94% of AI-related hiring is for people applying AI rather than specialist AI developers. The latest public sources do not yet provide this split monthly for May–August.

2. AI Job Demand Index

The AI Job Demand Index measures the percentage of all Indeed job postings containing AI-related terminology. Indeed uses a seven-day trailing average and covers terms including machine learning, data science and artificial intelligence.

Key takeawayUS AI-job penetration increased for four consecutive months. By the end of August, roughly one in every 15 US postings on Indeed mentioned AI, and the share remained almost twice as high as one year earlier.

3. AI Hiring by Geography

AI-job penetration is the share of all postings containing AI terminology. YoY growth shows how quickly that share is increasing compared with the same date one year earlier.

Key takeawayCanada remains the clear leader, with AI appearing in more than 18% of Indeed postings. The US continues to show the strongest momentum among the other tracked markets, with AI penetration almost doubling in a year. Australia was the only market in this comparison to record a small decline from July to August.

Indeed does not currently provide the same public monthly series for India, LATAM, MENA or most of APAC.

4. AI Hiring Intensity by Industry

AI Hiring Intensity measures the percentage of vacancies within an industry requiring at least one AI-related skill.

Key takeawayThe sector gap remains substantial: roughly one in eight TMT vacancies is AI-related, compared with fewer than one in 100 healthcare vacancies. No globally comparable monthly sector update covering August 2026 has yet been published, so full-year 2025 remains the latest global benchmark.

Bottom line. The August data strengthens the central trend of 2026: AI demand is still expanding quickly, but the larger labour-market transformation is happening inside existing professions. At the same time, the technical frontier is moving rapidly from general generative AI toward agents, orchestration and production-scale systems.
